Koini

Koini is a small village in the southeast of the island, about 23 kilometres from Chios, and is situated in the municipality of Ionia.

It was a medieval one like: Mesta, Olympoi and so on.
Koini was almost completely ruined and half the inhabitants died at the earthquake that happened in 1881.
This village is famous for the mastic-growing.
There are a lot of chapels in the village, the main church is Zoodochos Pygi built in 1879.
The lower part of Koini has suffered the less from the earthquake and therefore it is the better preserved part of the village.
