Thira (Santorini)
Located 175 km from the coast of Greece and 110 km from Crete, Thira is one of the most famous touristic centres in Greece. Being a remnant of a volcanic caldera Santorini have to offer a lot of beautiful landscapes consisting of volcanic black beaches, high cliffs and beautiful white villages on the top of these cliffs.
Thira is the largest island of a small, circular archipelago which bears the same name. The whole archipelago is the remnant of a volcanic cadera which, before the Minoan eruption about 3500 years ago, was a one big island. Because of that, now the island is a point of interest for many archelogists looking for the traces of ancient civilizations.
Santorini is best known for its white, traditional greek villages built on the top of even 300 m high cliffs. The capital of Santorini is Fira and the entire population of island is around 13 500 people.
The main source of profit for Thira is tourism: during the summer villages of Santorini are very busy; people from all over the world come there to relax in one of the many luxurious hotels located on the island.
