Lefkada

The island of Lefkada is situated in the Ionian Sea, on the west coast of Greece and is the less insular of all the Greek islands due to its connection with the mainland by a long floating bridge. The name of Lefkada comes from the white rocks that characterize the southern part of the island, because white in Greek is Lefkos.

The main city of the island is the city of Lefkada, where we can find some monuments as:
The Venetian Castle of Santa Mavra situated really close to Lefkada city or Chora,
The holy Church of Pantokratoros.
The holy Church of Theotokos.

In the centre of the island the traditional villages and customs remains and you can find many mountains as Stavrota that with 1,158 metres is the highest point of the island. But Lefkada is a Greek island after all and holds stunning vistas, forest and all over its coast some of the best beaches in Greece, like Porto Katsiki, Egremni, Kathisma or Agios Ioannis among others.

Also historically Lefkada is really a piece of study, The Corinthians colonised the island during the 7th century BC, built the new town of Lefkas and started the construction of the canal that separates Lefkada from the mainland in 650 BC, turning Lefkada into an island. Lefkada played also an important role in the Persian Wars and took part in the Peloponnesian War. But in 198 BC, Lefkada came under Roman domination. After some time Lefkada passed to be a part of the Sicilian rule territory from 1294 until 1331.

Later as many other places in Greece The Venetians ruled the island but their domination ended in 1797. No longer after this, in 1799 the allied fleet of the Turks, the Russian and the English won over the French. The English occupation became official with the Treaty of Paris, signed in 1815. Some years after this in 21st May of 1864, a treaty was signed proclaiming the unification of the Ionian Islands including Lefkada with the independent and newly born Greek State.

Also we can relate to Lefkada some myths and stories like the myth about Sappho (the greek woman lyric poet), which is related to other myths about Aphrodite the Greek goddess of love or the stories that point that Lefkada was Homer’s Ithaca and the palace of Odysseus was located west of Nydri, on the south coast of Lefkada.
