The Journey

The independent feature film “The Journey” mostly takes place in Greece and was co-produced by the British writer and director Lance Nielsen and a group of international producers, several of whom are Greek.

“The Journey” was produced on a very low budget. That is why it had to be shot in two parts in May 2013 and 2014 on the islands of Aegina, Kea and Agistri giving them enough time in between to crowd fund more money in order to be able to realise their project.

The film is about very different people who all suffer from a big personal loss and travel to Greece to find answers, distraction and hopefully healing in the beauty of this country. On the island Aegina they meet and their stories slowly weave together. Also the local people strongly influence their lives, sometimes even without knowing and trying and support them on their journey of finding their place in the world.

The story is inspired by Nielsen’s own personal experience. When he lost a beloved friend this threw him off the track so much that he took advice from a stranger he met online and went off to Greece the following day “to find himself in a country of unmatched beauty”. A few years after he had turned his back on the film industry he decided to realise this project which meant a lot to him and is dedicated to his lost friend Angela Thomas. Also “he wanted to do something about the country that had given him so much when he felt he had so little left” as he states on the website of the film “The Journey, and aimed “to restore a positive image of Greece that has been recently misrepresented by the world media at large due to focus on the recent financial crisis.”
