Kato Fana

The spirit of Greek mythology and Ancient faith was once strongly felt at the location on Chios Island we want to introduce you today.
Kato Fana was said as the abode where Leto had a revelation about the birthplace of her son Apollo – one of the powerful gods of Olympus.

In honor to this significant happening the temple of Fanaios Apollo was built in the end of the 6th century BC close to the sea.
Derived from this name, the surrounding area, the bay and also the belonging beach got their title.

We must confess, nowadays, Kato Fano is not anymore that mystic, exciting and legendary place as it was. Today, only the ruins of this sacred site of old Greeks remained and the small chapel of Agioi Theodoroi replaced it.

Nevertheless, a long time ago, mighty, sparkling waves of the Aegean Sea splashed against temple walls and pillars and a statue of Apollo was embedded on a gold plated pillow. Unfortunately, the whereabout of this effigy is still a secret – nobody ever found the statue, although some archeological studies took place in Kato Fano. Researcher only found Egyptian scarabs during the excavations. That proves at least the enormous importance of that location for different cultural groups.

Nonetheless, you should treat yourselves a day on the bay next to the temple ruins. It is one of the few white sandy beaches on the Island. Moreover, Kato Fana offers its visitors a comfortable privacy, because it is non - organized.  Transparent water shimmers turquoise and inviting in the protective environment of the hilly landscape. Surely, this lovely beach with its magical charm also attracts families of natives, as well as tourists. Parents don’t have to be afraid of their children hurting themselves on the stony ground, but relax on the comfortable sand.

So start to plan your stay at Kato Fano and set out there as soon as possible! Just follow the road that leads to Olympoi. You will find that beach which is overtopped by the famous Ancient remains of the temple of Fanaios Apollo near by Pyrgi in the South-Western area of Chios.
