Old town of Chios city

If you are looking for a nice walk, try the old town of Chios city inside the castle. This castle was originally a fortress to keep the town safe from enemies.

Many houses in the old town are still in the same style as they were originally built 200? years ago which gives them much charm. Because they are still in the original state, you can see how the architecture used to be. Most of the little balconies, big windows and nice doors are preserved very well.

This fortress was built in the Byzantine times around the 9th century and then repaired after the wars during the Genoa occupation in the 15th century. In the Southern Central Gate, also called Porta Maggiore, which the Venetians reconstructed in 1694, you can see this antiquity.

Of course now many houses are restored or rebuilt, but trying to maintain the spirit without changing the appearance of the old town. If you do a long walk, at some point you will find an old tall stone tower. The houses have sometimes just one floor with little terraces, many colourful plants and nice iron tables and chairs. For sure you will see the locals talking and having a Greek coffee!

The old town has little chapels, that you only will find if you are lucky because it sometimes is a labyrinth but don’t worry you will always find a way. We recommend you to stop in the old town square and enjoy the cafeterias there and don’t forget to visit the Iustiniani museum and the Turkish graves that are just around the corner.

You will not miss it because you can see it from the port, it is next to the central square and to the entrance of the city.
