The little match girl - A Christmas story

A short-story by Hans Christian Andersen published in 1845.

In 1843, a widely popular woodcut illustration by Danish artist Johan Thomas Lundbye picturing a poor child selling matches was printed in a calendar. Several illustrations of it had been sent to Andersen by the editor of an almanac requesting him to write a story around one and the short-story 'The little match girl was born.

It was first published in 1845 and is about a dying child's dreams and hope, but also about reunion, happiness and the sense of Christmas.
