Rimokastro

There are places on Chios island where people can imagine living in the ancient centuries. One of them is Rimokastro. In this exceptional place you can still feel the energy of times gone by.

Rimokastro is located on the plateau of Mount Epos above the settlement of Vrontados.
There you can find remains of farming and stock raising facilities: wells, vases, figurines, retaining walls, fences and ancient buildings, dating back to the Classic period (5th – 1st century BC).

The main building complex was probably the owner’s residence, it has a symmetrical plan and sheltered areas on both sides of the central quadrangular yard.
There you can also find an architecturally designed apartment which was the common of homesteads tower in the 4th century BC.

Isn’t it amazing how solid structures people could form then ?
The cultivated areas were protected by large stonewalls known as gyrismata, to prevent the escape of animals.

If you love hiking you can walk from Rimokastro to Astyfidolakko, along a special marked path. The total distance is 4.5km.
From these two points, you can see the entire archaeological site.

Rimokastro is also an invaluable place for archaeologists, which, basing on research and excavations, could specify the time of old cultivation methods or plants and animal husbandry. The archeologists were able to discover how they evolved through the ages.

Among scientists exists a dispute regarding the time when people were living in the area and the use of the buildings. There is a hypothesis that after years of depopulation, the area was resettled for the short time by the slaves with their leader - Drimakos who fled to the mountains, that happened propably in the Romanian times.

Maybe, when the researches will be finished, we will know the truth.
