Shirley Valentine

It is a british-american film adaptation of the 1989 based on tragic-comic art of Willy Russell (the well known english playwright and screenwriter), directed by Lewis Gilbert. The main character is a young woman who has dreams and goals, but they are quickly verified when she's getting married.


 Routine and daily responsibilities make that she is forced to forget about her earlier desires and now she has to dedicate everything to his husband, as the role of mother and wife, as a cook and a cleaner. She feels very unhappy and disappointed. Wondering what has happened to herself, now she realizes that she fell in stagnation and in a routine.

Shirley Valentine finds herself regularly talking to the wall while preparing her husband's chips and egg.

When her best friend wins a trip-for-two to Greece, she packs her bags, leaves a note on the cupboard door in the kitchen, and heads for a fortnight of rest and relaxation. What she finds is romance and a new awareness of who she is and what her existence can be.
On the Island Mykonos she finally has, what she was always looking for. Her life takes on  a new meaning.
In the film there are shown the beautiful landscapes of the greek island and fascinating culture of the inhabitants.

Pauline Collins, who played Shirley, has got a nomination to the Oscar Award for this character.

The art of Willy Russell was repeatedly adapted and performed in theaters around the world.
