Myrsinidi Monastery

In the eastern part of Chios Island you can find a small coastern town named Vrontados (Βροντάδος). Maybe you know it, because of the famous Rocket War in Easter time or as the supposedly birth town of the well known poet Homer. Additionally you will know one special location of this town more today.

The Myrsinidi Monastery was founded in 1897 by Christoforos Seremelis.

The monk dedicated it to the virgin of the Myrtles, to Panagia Myrtidiotissa. He found her miraculous icon below the monastery in the sea. During the “Second World War” it offered the opportunity of a spiritual backing for believer and members of the resistance. Till this day the monastery celebrates its feast at the 24 of September. In regard to this many people come together to eulogize her. Also special for this monastery is,  it keeps the vestments of Gregory V, the national martyr.

Today the Myrsinidi Monastery is inhabited by 4 Monks. They offer interested people the possibility to visit this location and in addition to this guest quarters, too.
