This message makes Xerxes very angry but for this moment he has to accept that the Greek alliance, led by Leonidas pushes the Persian army back. Leonidas plans are to force them back until the land connection of the peninsula Peloponnes, the Greek mainland. The pressure of the Greeks grows so high that Xerxes thinks about to avoid more defeats and to take his army to Sicily. In fact the Persians find a way to evade the pressure caused by the Greeks.

When Leonidas realizes encirclement he decides to send the army into the south to protect the Greek cities there.
