Educational System in Spain

The Spanish education system has 6 big stages. In the following article you can learn more about these and the educational system in general:

1.) Pre-school (between 0 and 5 years,voluntarily).

2.) Basic education (between 6 and 16 years) It is obligatorily and freely. It contains: the primary school  (6 courses) and second obligatory education (4 courses).

3.) Bachelor: two years of schooling 16 to 18 years of age. Voluntarily After that there are 2 possibilities: One of them it  is:

4.) The "FP" degree: "profession formation" after or before the bachelor degree to choose an education for jobs such as carpenter, hairdresser, plumber etc.Another possibility is:

5.) The University: Now everybody has the same diploma after the university named "grado".but before 2010 the university had two groups of diplomas, one of them takes three years (graduate and technical certificate) to become a teacher or to study tourism for example and the other one takes for 4 or more years to study journalism or psychology

6.) The post university: One and a half year more at the university for the "master degree" or also for writing a thesis about one topic to achieve a doctor's degree.

The education in Spain start when Spanish people are 6 years old, but it is very normally that the children go to the school 3 years before, even earlier in the kindergarten. When the child is 6 years old, it is the first obligatory education for them. This period is long: 10 years- but it is divided in the Primary school (6 courses). After this time, spanish students finish the school and now it is time to go to the high school to study the second obligatory education  (4 cuorses).

Until now all the education was obligatory, but from now on, it is voluntarily. In this moment you decide to go to special School "FP" for becoming

carpenter, hairdresser, plumber etc. In this case you will be half degreed because you did not study as long as you would have to for a bachelor. This education is for 2 years. One and a half year, the study is only theoretically and arround 6 months it is practically in an intership in a real company.

Or you can study for the bachelor for 2 years, normally at the age of 17 and 18 and we have 3 groups of different bachelors. You need to decide which kind of bachelor you want to study: Science of health and earth, geographic and studies about the humanity and technology. These are the different possibilities to reach a Bachelor degree.

When Spanish people finish the bachelor they can decide if they want to go to the "FP" school and study the same that I explained before but in this case they will be superior decreed because they studied a bachelor before.

If you decide to go on your studies in the bachelor, now you can go to the university and study for 4 years more. But first it is necessarily to pass a very hard test consisting of one exam for every subject of Bachelor which you have already studied before. The name of this test is "selectivad" because it is the way to select the people who will go to the university.

Finally the university in Spain is like the rest of the European's with the "Bologna project", that means every subject that you study in the university is for 4 years.

Now, you can continue your studies if you feel like to keep on at the university because it is you would like to study the master's degree which is more detailed. But if you really want to study more you can prepare your thesis about your master degree or even prepare yourself for becoming a teacher at the university.

The education is Spain is free if you go to a public school oppositely you have to pay if you decide to learn at a private school. The government provides the books, texts and one laptop for every student for their school and high school.
