Dogtooth

Maintained in a similar climate as Attenberg, Dogtooth is a one of the most terrifying movies of the recent years.

The movie was directed by Yorgos Lanthimos, who also produced the movie Attenberg - which description you can find here. Another intersting point is that the producer of Dogtooth is Anthia Rachel Tsangari - the director of Attenberg.

In this bizzare drama three siblings - an older daughter (Aggeliki Papoulia), a younger dauther (Mary Tsoni) and a son (Christos Passalis) live in illusive world of their parents. They don't have names. Father and mother (Christos Stergioglou and Michele Valley) live in a large house on the outskirts of an unnamed Greek town, together with their children, whose ages range from mid-teens to early twenties. The hause is surrounded by a tall fence, and the children have never been allowed to leave it. Their knowledge of the  outside world has been strictly controlled by their parents, who taught them only what they believe is important and save. They treat their children like an animals, without any emotions and feelings. The only contact the youngsters have with the outside world is in form of Christina (Anna Kalaitzidou), who works with their father. This woman and number of events commence a chain reaction, that has terrible consequences for everyone.

In this laboratory conditions, the director put a metaphorical story with social-political message about dangers of being isolated from the world, as individuals and nations.

The film won the Prix on Certain Regard at the 2009 Film Festival in Cannes and was nominated
for an Oscar for Best Foreign Language Film.

A genuine original... one of the darkest, most unsettling, weirdest films of  the year.                                                                                         ~The Times (London)
