Landscape in the Mist

One of the most important films in Theo Anglelopoulos achievements.

The film was directed by Theo Angelopoulos in 1988, and received the following awards:

  • Silver Lion on the Venice Film Festival 1988
  • Best European Film 1989
  • OCIC Award Venice Film Festival 1989
  • InterFilm Award on the Berlin Film Festival 1988

It is a film about emptiness, despair and failure of the contemporary society. It is a kind of road movie, where the main characters - two Greek children, Alexandre (Michalis Zeke) and Voula (Tania Palaiologou) started a journey to Germany to find their father, of whom they believe to live there. This is what their mother told them (the figure of the mother remains an off-screen presence). But the truth is, that he exist only in their dreams. The journey is continued on foot, by train, car, boat, vans and lorries. But it turns out to be pointless and disappointing for the two. Alexandre and Voula confront physical and moral suffering, jealousy, evil and even death. They meet many people including a group of actors or rough truck driver. The journey ends their innocent childhood, and introduce them into early adulthood.

Angelopoulos is a great master. A powerfull film with startling imagery.

Landscape in the Mist is not just about two children looking for their father. It is a journey which is the initiation into life. On the road they learn everything - love and death, lies and truth, beauty and destruction. The journey is simply a way to focus on what life gives us all

~ Theo Angelopoulos
