The Sphinx

"Which creature has one voice and yet becomes four-footed and two-footed and three-footed?" Do you know the answer of this riddle? I would recommend to think about this very carefully. If you aren't able to find it out, the Sphinx will strangle you, bite your throat and holds it down until you will die. This creature rather sounds like an invention of a horror movie, doesn't it? Or is it a creature of the Greek mythology?

The Sphinx is a creature which has a head of a woman, a body of a lioness, wings like an eagle and a serpent - tale. It often acts as a guard in front of buildings and asks everyone who passes by different riddles that have to be solved. In case you fail, the sphinx is very merciless and nobody can escape from this cruel death. Another riddle that has to be solved is: "There are two sisters: one gives birth to the other and she, in turn, gives birth to the first. Who are the two sisters?"

What do you think? Can the Sphinx really be a creature of the Greek mythology? You can check your guess when you click on the solution – button! You can also test yourself if you would be able to survive by thinking about the solutions of these two riddles. These you can also find by clicking on the solution button. I hope you to stay alive to discover the next creature from HELLas!

The Sphinx is indeed a creature of the Greek mythology, even if the Sphinx in Egypt could first come to your mind. The only one who was able to solve the riddle of the Sphinx has been Oedipus, so maybe you are as clever as him. The solution of the first riddle is: ”Man—who crawls on all fours as a baby, then walks on two feet as an adult, and then uses a walking stick in old age.” And here the solution of the second riddle: "day and night" (these ones are sisters because the Greek words for day and night are in the female gender). What is also remarkable: The Sphinx has been an emblem of the ancient city state of Chios and you could find it on seals and coins.
