Vangelis

Evangelos Odysseas Papathanassiou(Ευάγγελος Οδυσσέας Παπαθανασίου), known as Vangelis, born in March 29, 1943 at Volos. He is a Greek multi-instrumentalist and composer specializing in soundtracks. He often uses electronic instruments alternated with classics instruments.

 

Vangelis began composing music at age four but he always refused the lessons for learn to write and read the notes. In the early 60 he founded The Forminx a group was most famous in Greece in those years.

After some years he moved to Paris where founded another groups The Aphrodite's Child.After many musical productions he moved to London where he started to work for RCA. In that place he created his major successes like Heaven and Hell (1975), Spiral (1977) and China (1979).

The music of Vangelis are used as soundtracks for documentaries, commercials, tv shows, news reports and even as unofficial anthems of major events such as sporting or political. 

In 1982 he won the oscar with the soundtrack of Chariots of Fire of Hugh Hudson. he wrote other soundtracks that made him even more famous in particular thanks to the soundtracks of Blade Runner and thanks to 1942 – the Conquest of Paradise.

In the 2001 he wrote Mythodea that it was used by NASA for their mission 2001 Mars Odyssey. He did not make many public performances, the only concert that you have videos which is what he did to Temple of Zeus in Athens.

In the 2002 he wrote  the hymn for the football world championship. In the 2004 he published the soundtrack for the film Alexander directed by  Oliver Stone and based on the life of Alexander The Great.

In the 2007 published two albums: the first is a set of three CD for the 25 anniversary of Blade Runner called Blade Runner Trilogy. The second album most important for his career was the soundtrack that he wrote for the film: El Greco that it tells about the life of painter Domínikos Theotokópoulos.

In the fall of 2008, realizes the main track for Świadectwo called Testimony outside of Poland, this is a documentary on the life of Pope Giovanni PaoloII. 

In 2016, after 18 years since the last studio work, Vangelis announces the release of a new album, Rosetta, inspired by the ESA space mission of 2014, where the Philae space probe landed on the Rosetta comet.
