Lipsi

The name of Lipsi derives from Odysseus myth: while he was returning home from Troy, he was imprisoned for a long time on the island by the Goddess Calypso who wanted to make him his immortal husband. The origin of the word “Lipsi” comes from “leipsos” which literally means “lack”. Although Odysseus had better things to do, and fled from Calypso, some of you would probably enjoy to be trapped on this island for a short holiday and would surely appreciate its beautiful landscape and views.

Lipsi is a small island situated North of Kos and South of Samos and it consists in a small group of over 37 islets out of which only Lipsi (16 square kilometres) is inhabited. This island belongs to the complex of Dodecanese Greece and is under the municipality of Kalymnos regional units. Also its history is closely related to the one of the neighbouring islands, and especially to Patmos. During the Byzantine time, many parts of Lipsi used to belong to the Monastery of St. John the Baptist which was situated on Patmos, and many monks moved from Patmos to Lipsi. For this reason you can find many churches all over Lipsi. Some of these churches are very ancient, as the Panaghia tou Charou which was built in the 16th century and is located on the highest point of the island.

Lipsi does not present any high hill or mountain and the flat landscape offers the opportunity for some good trekking. Also, due to its flatness, the land is incredibly fertile: wine, honey, olives, tomatoes and figs are produced here and, together with the tourism sector, they represent a very relevant part of the island's economy.

On the island you can find both sandy and pebbled beaches, most of them are reachable by a walking distance from the main town (such as Lientou, Kambos, Elena), where as for others you have to trek a little more .. but once you will get there you will for sure benefit from the emptiness of the space and you will find your own secret spots that will make your holiday even more enjoyable.
