Thirassia island

Today I will tell you a little bit about the interesting island Thirassia. It is also named Therasia, Thirasía or (in Greek) Θηρασία.
Thirassia is a small island in the volcanic island group of Santorini in the Greek Cyclades. It is a part of the community of Oia and has an area of 9.3 km2

There are about five villages on the island that is the home of about 270 people. Manola, the capital of the island, is reachable by foot or donkey. It is one of the main attractions of Thirassia island and often called a “time capsule” as the time seems to have stopped here. From Manola you also have a perfect view of Santorini.
When you visit Thirassia, take a look at the beautiful churches (there are 21 churches in total) or visit the sandy beach in Riva harbour. Experience the typically Greek narrow pathways and the colourfully painted bell towers and houses. Many of the houses are built into the rock which is really intersiting to see. Also worth visiting is the largest and oldest city named Agrilia which looks picturesque with its cave houses.
When you want to explore the island a little bit more, bring your bike as the timetable of the bus is a little bit insecure. You could also explore the volcanic islets near to Therassia that are still active and can be visited on an excursion. And last but not least: the sunsets on the island are romantic and beautiful.
You can reach Thirassia island by day boat trips from Santorini. There is also a small ferry of the island itself which is called “pantoffla” by the locals. The ferry travels daily but it is difficult to know exactly when and where she arrives or leaves.
Until the year 235 BC, Therassia was a part of Santorini. A huge volcanic eruption separated them, turning it into an interisitng rocky island. Thirassia is what Santorini used to be before the tourism – peaceful and really quite. Nearly no one speaks another language than Greek. But especially the small size and the amount of inhabitants create the charm and uniqueness of this island. Therassia is perfect for a calm, relaxing and interesting day trip.
