The clock tower

Everybody knows the Big Ben, the huge clock tower in London. Its one of the most visited sights and seen as a typical British building. Did you know that the clock tower is a Greek invention?

In a time when a clock was not affordable for everyone, the Greeks invented this tower being visible from far away to show people what time it is. It was also used to create one universal time measurement tool. Around 50 BC the Greek astronomer Andronicus of Cyrrhus built the The Tower of Winds which is also known as the Horologion of Andronikos Kyrrhestes. The building is located in the Roman Agora in Athens and is equipped with sundials, a water clock, and a wind vane. So it’s a clock and also a weather station. In the last two years the 13.5 m high Tower of Winds got restored and can now be seen by tourists in the way it looked more than two thousand years ago.
