The Anchor

The Greece since the times of antiquity is the dominatrix of the Aegean sea.
The Hellenic contribution to ship construction is huge. The Greek were some of the firsts who made long sea voyages and who built ships that could not be brought to shore, thus forcing them to find a way to tie their ships d

own when there was nothing to tie them to. Anchors of huge stones have been around since the Bronze Age, but the Greek were the first to solve the problem in a technological manner. Most often these anchors, called often as 'teeth' (ὀδὁντες) in Hellenic poetry, consisted of sacks or buckets filled with stones, although later versions were made of stone and already had the shape of anchors so well know today. Every ship had several anchors.
Nowadays all the ships require an anchor to stop in the port or in the open sea, so it is become a fundamental part of the ship and there are several different kinds.
