Μονεμβασία - Monemvasia

Monemvasia is a greek small island located on the east coast of the Peloponnese, in Laconia region. The island is linked to the mainland through a causeway 200 m length which has been built in 1971.
Monemvasia has centuries of history with different

colonizations, from the Byzantine empire, from Venice and the Ottomans.
The structure and power of the island is due to its appearance: not seen from the mainland because it seems a giant rock and open-door into the sea. On the south-west part of the island there is the town carved on this huge rock which for centuries was a strong fortress which is still alive today as medieval village.
Most of the roads are very small only for pedestrian and donkey traffic.
It is for the most visited in summer and particular for features Byzantines churches. Some of the medieval buildings have been restored and converted to hotel which in the last years have seen increasing the tourism. On July 23rd  is the independence day celebration and it is held in the main port, speeches and story of Tzannetakis Grigorakis and his men are told in Greek and in English. For this day the inhabitants build a ship and fill it with pyrotechnics fireworks and set it on fire, it is a great celebration you would like to see if you are in Monemvasia.
